Cities are opening up across the country which should bring some relief to pet owners. Whether you choose to continue working from home or catching a “break” in the office, Nandi is here to help keep your furbabies entertained, and away from your furniture or shoes with these nose and brain exercises using your favorite pet treats.
To make a tea towel snuffle mat, simply place a towel flat on the floor and put some treats in the middle. Fold it longways across the treats then tie it in a loose knot keeping the treats inside. Your dog will spend some time trying to untie the knot. Switch things up by tying multiple tea towels together in a row.
This puzzle is great for scent work. Place a few containers (any small or medium box, or yogurt tub) together on the ground and bait some of them with some pet food or strongly scented treat in one or two and let your dog hunt around for their reward. If your pup isn’t too keen at first, try poking some holes to make it easier. You can vary the difficulty by stacking the containers “Russian doll” style, or by decreasing the number of treats.
This one’s super easy. Cut up some old t-shirts or rags into strips and braid the strips together with a few pet treats wrapped in each braid. Tie knots on both braided ends and this not only works as a scent work puzzle, but it also doubles up as a tugging toy. If you’re feeling crafty you can also stitch the t-shirt cuts together into little pockets for you to deposit some pet food or treats inside.
This puzzle is great for the summer heat. Put some pet food or small treats into an ice cube tray and fill with water before placing it in the freezer to set for a few hours. You can also use a Nandi Nguni Beef Pizzle as a popsicle stick by setting it in the freezer with some water in a yogurt cup. Once frozen let your dog play with its popsicle or ice cube until it melts.
Place some pet treats or pet food into few cups of a muffin tray and then fill all the cups in the tin pan with some tennis balls (or any other small ball). Place the tray on the floor and let your pet sniff out the treats by removing the balls.
